Family wants answers in Fayetteville man's death in Chicago

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. — A Fayetteville family says their loved-one was murdered in Chicago, and they aren’t getting any answers or leads on the case.

Channel 2’s Craig Lucie met with them Tuesday afternoon, and they explained how he was attacked, robbed and left in the street where he was hit by a cab.

No one has been arrested.

Friends say 32-year-old Marques Gaines of Fayetteville was the ultimate groomsman because he was in that many weddings.

Those same friends are now selling T-shirts with his smiling face on them to raise money for a private detective to find the person who attacked him outside a popular Chicago bar called Mother Hubbard Tavern.

"When he walked away, the guy punched him and knocked him into the street and then he was ran over by a cab," said Drexina Nelson, who is well-known photographer.

Nelson, who is Gaines' sister, says the cab driver stopped, but the guy who randomly attacked, robbed and left him in the street hasn't been found.

"No one is answering any questions. We don't know who did it. We don't want it to be a cold case," said Nelson.

Channel 2 Action News contacted the Chicago Police Department several times and is still waiting to hear back. Nelson and her mother, Phyllis, say police have video of the attack and a picture of the suspect.

“(We want them) to release the picture. Understand there’s a whole bunch of people hurting, and we need answers,” said Nelson.

The Nelson family says when they held a celebration of life for Marques, more than 100 people flew down from Chicago, leaving messages in their photography studio that they will cherish forever.

“You remind us all that we can do better,” said Nelson.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account.
