Famous Joes restaurant fails health inspection

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County restaurant that recently remodeled and expanded just got a failing health inspection of 47.

The owner of Famous Joes in Gwinnett County didn’t hesitate to show Channel 2 Action News their kitchen just a few days after the Buford family-type restaurant on Hamilton Mill Road failed its health inspection.

Several of the violations include hand washing issues.

“(We had) some hand washing issues that we definitely need to address, because that’s a really important situation,” owner Pete Watt said.

Some of the other violations included an employee on cellphone then returned to food prep without washing hands, multiple employees coming in back door and not washing hands before food prep, employee cutting celery bare handed, and multiple pots and pans stored as clean were dirty.

Watt showed Channel 2 Action News a sign in the kitchen that emphasizes hand washing is required and says he is stressing that to workers.

He said he’s tried to do the best he can to let workers know how imperative it is to wash hands, because the worst thing would be if someone got sick because of cross-contamination.

Watt says after the inspection he reviewed and revamped the restaurant’s procedures.

He’s training workers to know what is required every time they are in the kitchen.

Watt is confident the food he serves is quality food.

He told Channel 2 Action News he has a few issues with how the score was calculated and plans to talk to Gwinnett County about that.

The last inspection Famous Joes got was in December. They received an 84.

We’ll report on the new score when they are reinspected.

UPDATE:

Upon re-inspection, Famous Joes earned a 95, which is an A.
