PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. — The family of a youth football coach paralyzed in an accident is suing the Peachtree City Facility where he broke his neck falling off a trampoline.
Jonathan Magwood coached the Union City Eagles Youth Football team for about four years. On Nov. 30 he was celebrating the end of the season with his team at Rockbridge Adventure Recreation Center when he jumped off a trampoline into what was supposed to be a safe foam pit.
He is now paralyzed from the neck down.
Channel 2's Diana Davis has followed this story since the accident.
The coach’s mother and her lawyer told Davis this type of industry is not regulated in Georgia.
"I think there needs to be some regulations and laws in place so this can not happen again," said mother Mallory Magwood.
Mallory Magwood said another man broke his back at the same facility just ten months before Jonathan’s accident.
“That’s the amazing thing,” said the Magwoods’ lawyer, Chris Stewart. “That’s what really demonstrates how dangerous some of these foam pits and trampolines can be.”
Jonathan Magwood continues physical and occupational therapy at Atlanta’s Shepherd Center. Though doctors say he will never walk again, his mother said her son has moved one finger.
“He has good days and bad days. We take it one day at a time,” said Mallory Magwood.
Jonathan Magwood will remain at the Shepherd Center for about another month, then he will go home to his mother’s house where he will need professional care around the clock.
