Fake Best Buy employee robs people using Craigslist

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are investigating at least two robberies connected to a Craigslist ad. Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes spoke with one of the victims, who says the robber disguised himself as a Best Buy employee.

When Aaron Willis saw an ad on Craigslist, he thought he was about to get a deal. The ad was offering five brand new iPhone 6's for $2,000.

Willis spoke to the seller, who said his name was AJ. "This guy just seemed more legit, I guess, the way he talked," Willis said.

Willis drove to northeast Atlanta from Fort Benning, Georgia, where he is stationed.

"He was even like,'Yeah I'll have my break,' because he said he worked at Best Buy, and I was like 'sweet, I'll just meet you in the parking lot,'" Willis said.

The man came out of the store with a uniform that looked like a Best Buy uniform. He gave Willis receipt for the money and said he'd be right back with the phones.

He never returned, and when Willis went inside the store to get his $2,000 back, no one knew of an AJ.

Police believe the same man may also be responsible for a similar crime that took place on Tuesday.

Another man claims he also came to this store to buy some iPhones from a worker who also advertised on Craigslist.

Police say this time, the robber used a gun and got away with $1,600.

Willis says he's avoiding Craigslist so he won't get scammed again.

Detectives with the APD says they are actively pursuing this Craigslist scammer who has gotten away with nearly $4,000.
