SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — The attorney representing five victims of alleged sexual harassment at the Spaulding County Sheriff's Department is talking only to Channel 2's Matt Belanger.
The GBI arrested former Spalding County Sheriff's Captain David Gibson, who is now facing 10 criminal charges.
The investigation into these allegations determined Gibson created a "sexually charged" work environment at the Spalding County Sheriff's Department.
Gibson retired in May to avoid being fired.
Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested him in September. He's charged with aggravated sexual battery, stalking and public indecency.
Attorney Eleanor Attwood Represents five women who allege Gibson, a former Spalding County Sheriff's captain, sexually harassed them.
"That he touched their private parts," Attwood says. "That he satisfied his own sexual desires in their presence."
Investigators found if female workers refused Gibson's sexual advances, he used his power to "retaliate" against them.
"And there's very little they could do about it," Attwood said.
Investigators also uncovered evidence Gibson watched "pornography in his office" while "on the job", and sent female deputies photos of his genitals on more than one occasion.
Attwood's lawsuit also alleges current Sheriff Wendell Beam knew about the misconduct and looked the other way.
"This is the entity charged with protecting people from this kind of misconduct and it's happening under their noses and they knew it, and nothing is done about it," Attwood said.
Attwood won't put a dollar amount for how much money the women are seeking in damages, but hinted it will be significant amount.
"Money will never fix the damage that's done, but it's the only remedy we have," Attwood said.
