COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Exclusive new video shows a big black SUV that police said was driven by an elementary school principal as it makes a turn and slams into a couple’s car.
Addison Elementary Principal Jill Spiva was charged with a DUI and resigned a short time later.
A witness says she had children in the car with her, Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell learned.
It happened in January at the intersection of Ebenezer and Sandy Plains Road, a short distance from the school.
The victim’s wife, Rebecca Sumner, said she is not happy with how the investigation is going. She and her husband want charges added because there were children in the car.
Channel 2 asked the Cobb County Solicitor General’s Office about that, but they said the office doesn’t comment on pending cases.
Police say they found a half empty bottle of vodka behind Spiva’s driver’s seat after the crash happened.
Sumner says her husband was stopped at a redlight when he was hit.
“He sustained some whiplash and went to the doctor, an orthopedic doctor, and they prescribed physical therapy among other things,’ she said.
After the crash, a woman who called 911 said she saw Spiva hit a sign and noticed children in the car.
“She’s pulled over she’s got a few kids in the car,” the caller told 911.
The police report has two kids listed, but they aren’t mentioned in the narrative.
Sumner says her husband told police he saw them in the car.
“He told them multiple times there were two kids in the car, and I told them,” she said.
Sumner and her husband are also frustrated with how long the investigation has taken.
Cobb County police said they later discovered that children were in the SUV but were picked up before officers arrived on scene.
They said if children under 14 are in a car driven by an impaired driver, there could be a DUI-child endangerment charge added.
