Drivers say items flew off truck, badly damaged cars

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A freak accident along Interstate 285 nearly killed a driver during Friday's evening rush hour.

A Channel 2 Action News viewer tweeted a photo during the evening commute. A heavy object damaged at least one car.

Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes spoke with the driver of the car who narrowly escaped serious injury.

Jonathan McEntyre told Fernandes that he was in shock. She interviewed him on the side of the highway right after the incident happened

"It was probably about this big, like the size of a skateboard," McEntyre said.

McEntyre said he was heading east on I-285 on Friday evening, when an unknown object smashed the front of his car.

Right before the impact, he said he saw a pickup truck in front of him. The truck was hauling another car behind it.

"Something flies up from underneath it and I see it coming so I just kind of close my eyes and turn my head, because it's about to hit me," McEntyre said.

Luckily McEntyre wasn't hurt.

"It could've turned out a lot worse," McEntyre said.

As he made his way to the emergency lane, barely seeing out of the windshield, McEntyre tried to identify the pickup truck.

"I looked at the vehicle and tried to catch a glimpse of the tag or something like that, something to remember, but I couldn't see anything," McEntyre said.

DeKalb County police are investigating the incident. It's still unclear what hit the car.
