ATLANTA — “Some of them work, sometimes they work and sometimes it doesn’t,” driver Robin Jackson said.
Jackson is one of many drivers who have reached out to Channel 2 Action News in frustration about the new variable speed limit signs in the metro area.
One Channel 2 Action News viewer sent a photo from Interstate-285 where there are two signs, one on each side of the road. The signs showed different speed limits.
Another viewer shared a photo on social media with WSB-TV on Twitter that showed the sign indicating a speed limit of zero. Another said it was 6 mph.
Drivers on I-285 say they are fed up with the nearly 200 digital signs along the highway. They said it causes even more stress during their morning commutes.
“It’s a waste of money. It makes no sense,” Jackson said.
Drivers said the concept of variable speed limit signs is confusing, but the Georgia Department of Transportation says the signs prevent secondary traffic in the event of an accident or a weather event.
“I think it’s unacceptable, like the taxpayer money that went into it,” driver Jake Pugh said. “I know they were testing them before they put them into place and they should be working at this point.
GDOT sent Channel 2 Action News the following statement about the signs:
“We’re entering the second week of having the system online. Lanes should be driving one speed, not two. We are experiencing minor glitches with a few of the signs, but they should all be fixed by the end of the week.”
