JEFFERSON, Ga. — Contaminated dog food has been recalled over a salmonella outbreak.
The product has made 14 people sick so far, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Channel 2's Jeff Dore talked to a woman who suspects it nearly killed her husband.
Alicia Kelsey and her husband, Tim, have several pets at their home outside Jefferson, including a dog named Jackson. A few weeks ago, Jackson was sick and about a week later, Tim Kelsey was sick.
"Wednesday, [I] ended up having to call an ambulance to come and get him. I couldn't get him out to the car," Kelsey told Dore.
Then, they heard about the recall of dog foods made by Diamond pet foods, the same brand Jackson ate. Kelsey has ruled out anything her husband ate as the salmonella culprit.
"We ate the same things that weekend, and I didn't get sick," Kelsey said.
So far, the CDC has no confirmed cases of Georgians getting salmonella from handling Diamond dog food.
"But my husband was the primary one to be feeding the dog and handling the dog food," Kelsey said.
The Kelseys are working to get the state department to investigate their case.
