Doctor who tried to save fallen officer upset by lack of community outcry

RIVERDALE, Ga. — A doctor who worked to save the life of a local police officer says he's struggled since the shooting.

Riverdale police Maj. Greg Barney died after being shot during a drug raid one week ago.

In an exclusive interview with Channel 2 Action News, Dr. Barry Zisholtz with Southern Regional Medical Center said the hospital's staff did everything it could to try to save Barney's life when he arrived in the emergency room.

He says he's frustrated Barney's death hasn't sparked outrage in the community.

"These officers are basically forgotten and it is gut wrenching for me," Zisholtz told Channel 2's Matt Belanger.

Zisholtz is chief of staff at Southern Regional. He was in the room as doctors tried to save Barney's life.

Police say Jerand Ross shot Barney four times during a drug raid at the Villages on the River apartment complex Feb. 11. Barney later died at the hospital.

Zisholtz told Belanger the experience has affected him personally and he wanted to speak out about Barney's death.

"(I want) to make sure everyone knows Officer Barney was a hero," Zisholtz said.

Channel 2 Action News was there as Barney's family and friends held a vigil Tuesday evening.

Barney's widow, Lisa, spoke to those who gathered.

"I just want you to know we thank you," she said.

"My heart goes out to her and her two boys," Zisholtz said.

Zisholtz told Belanger he feels Barney's death should have the community up in arms, protesting the violence that took his life.

"I think someone has to get out and say this has got to stop," Zisholtz said.

Zisholtz referenced the unrest and protests that received national attention after recent racially charged, police-involved shootings across the country.

He told Belanger he doesn't understand why Barney's murder isn't getting similar attention.

"In a positive way but a protesting way saying police officers lives matter because they are the ones who protect us," Zisholtz said.

The hospital lowered its flags to half-staff in honor of Barney. They'll stay that way until he's buried.
