Disabled vet faces eviction after VA cuts benefits

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A disabled Vietnam veteran is at risk of being evicted from his home after his VA benefits were cut.

He says he's in the process of appealing that decision. But in the meantime, he can barely make ends meet.

Harold Kittrell told Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes the VA cut his benefits because his wife is getting money from another federal agency. It has nothing to do with the VA, but they're saying it all falls under household income.

"I have the right to have this money reimbursed," he said.

Before Kittrell got married to his wife Donna, he was paying for medical expenses out of pocket and getting his money back.

But when the VA found out his wife was receiving Social Security benefits for her adopted daughter who lives in another household, they said "The veteran's household income exceeds the income threshold for the pension amount he was receiving."

"I see not a penny of this money," Kitrell said.

His wife showed Fernandes the letter the Social Security administration sent the VA, explaining that the money goes straight to the child.

"They wrote it to them and told them that it was not my money. I was just a fiduciary," Donna Kittrell said.

VA officials say they are looking into the specifics of this case.

While Kittrell waits, he's still going to sport his military pride on his head, his chair, and all throughout his home.

"If they actually took time and looked at the paperwork we provided, they would see that they are in error," Donna Kittrell said.
