JONES COUNTY, Ga. — A Sunday morning incident in Jones County, not far from Macon, justifies why police officers often talk about the importance of wearing bulletproof vests while on duty.

According to Jones County Sheriff Butch Reece in a Facebook post, one of his deputies was shot in his vest Sunday morning during what he thought would be a routine traffic stop.
Deputy Kile immediately called for help and began pursuing the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Zachary Olivar of Snellville. Another sheriff’s deputy and a City of Gray police officer responded and helped lay down stop sticks to safely stop Oliver.
Sheriff Reece said Deputy John Kile had pulled over a car on Highway 11 between Wayside and Round Oak, when the driver of the car he pulled over shot him, hitting his vest.
The sheriff said Deputy Kile was transported to a nearby medical center, where he was treated and released.

Olivar was transported to the Jones County Jail where he is being held without bond while facing aggravated assault charges.
