DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Some DeKalb County parents are upset that a plan to build a high school to help with overcrowding was put on hold.
In 2018, the DeKalb County School District tore down the old Briarcliff High School Building on North Druid Hills Road.
The district said a new Cross Keys High School would be built there to relieve overcrowding at the current Cross Keys High.
Gabriela Duran has children in the Cross Keys corridor. She says she is sad that the DeKalb School District decided last week to put eight major projects, including the new high school, on hold.
Cross Keys High is in fast-growing Brookhaven.
Christina De La Cruz says the area needs a new high school because the population has grown so much.
Channel 2’s Carol Sbarge reached out to the DeKalb School District to talk to the interim school superintendent about why this project was put on hold.
She has refused to do any interviews.
In a statement, the district said the focus will be on coming up with a comprehensive master plan in the next year to deal with overcrowding.
The district says in the future, the board will decide what should happen to the now empty property where the old Briarcliff High was torn down.
Parents in the Cross Keys corridor, many of whom are Hispanic, want better communication from the school district about all of this.
Duran says no one has come out and talked to them about the latest decision.
