DECATUR, Ga. — Crews are working to fix a broken water main that's caused a big mess in a DeKalb County neighborhood.
The break happened near the intersection of Parkhill and Glenwood drives in Decatur.
Thousands of students were dismissed early from school Thursday afternoon because of the broken pipe.
The pipe that caused the huge problem is 40 years old, and county officials say that part is already repaired.
They're finalizing the other issues, and say it will all be fixed by end of day Friday.
Overnight, they pumped thousands of gallons of water out of the broken pipe.
A spokesperson from the water department said residents who live in the area will continue to see reduced water pressure for at least the next two days.
Some neighbors in the area told Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes that the breaks are becoming a common occurrence.
"This is the third pipe that's busted in 12 years," said neighbor Chris Ferrell Sr.
But his new concern is that the water from the latest break is threatening the safety of his home.
The water is being pumped from the street, down to his yard, saturating the ground.
He's afraid the roots of these trees will loosen up.
"It's going to cause them to fall, that's what's going to happen," Ferrell said.
While crews tried to repair the problem all day Thursday, several schools in the area had no water, or problems with water pressure, so all students were dismissed early.
Neighbors like Dan Simon said he had running water the entire time.
"It's like a big mess," Simon said. "It's just hard to get in and out of the driveway."
School officials say the water will be tested before school Friday morning and kids will be in class as usual.
