Small explosion at DeKalb elementary school caused by boiler malfunctioning

DeKalb County Fire responded to a possible gas leak and small explosion inside a local elementary school Sunday.

Fire officials told Channel 2 Action News the incident happened at Hawthorne Elementary School off Caladium Drive.

Atlanta Gas Light company said a joint investigation found that a boiler malfunctioned and there was not a natural gas leak.

“On Sunday morning, Atlanta Gas Light crews coordinated with first responders to address reports of a natural gas smell near Hawthorne Elementary School in Atlanta. A joint investigation into the issue has determined there were no leaks on the natural gas service lines that Atlanta Gas Light maintains; however, a boiler on the school’s property was functioning improperly. Once the school makes repairs, we will return to complete safety inspections,” a spokesperson said.

No one was inside the building at the time of the incident and there were no injuries. There was some damage inside the school that crews worked to clean up.

Channel 2 Action News reached out to DeKalb County Schools to learn more about the damage and received this statement:

“DeKalb County School District is currently working to assess the damage caused and make the necessary repairs to bring staff and students back to the building safely. The District does not have a timeline at this time.”
