Metro Atlanta city to host public meeting on lowering speed limits

DECATUR, Ga. — The City of Decatur launched a speed study in September to evaluate what it would mean to lower speed limits across the city.

Channel 2 Action News reported when, through the study, Decatur officials are working to understand how lowering speed limits in areas marked above 25 mph would impact safety and traffic.

Previously, the city said these instruments are gathering information on vehicle volumes, vehicle speeds, vehicle types and bicycle and pedestrian activity.

With the study still underway, Decatur officials are preparing to hold their second public meeting on the study.

At these meetings, the city will share details about the process with residents and show how speed management measures could be used to enhance overall street safety in Decatur.

The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Decatur Public Works Community Center on Talley Street in room 2635.

City officials will share the study’s initial findings at the upcoming meeting and describe how the data they’ve examined so far is shaping how they move forward with proposal to reduce speed limits across Decatur.
