DeKalb apartment fire that killed 2 being investigated as possible homicide

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga — Two people are dead after a DeKalb County apartment fire, and now officials tell Channel 2 Action News that it is being investigated as a possible homicide.

DeKalb Fire and Rescue officials said the fire broke out at the Brannon Hills Apartments on Baynes Hill Circle in Clarkston around 8:45 a.m.

Captain Jaeson Daniels with DeKalb Fire said when firefighters arrived, they found thick smoke in the ground-floor condo and inside a bedroom, the burned bodies of two people.

Daniels said no other condos in the building were damaged.

Channel 2′s Bryan Mims was at the complex Wednesday, where there wasn’t much damage apparent on the outside.

A neighbor named Bella said she smelled fumes inside her building and called the gas company.

“I’m glad I did, and I’m glad it didn’t spread, because I actually have kids in my house,” she said. “So that was really concerning for me. Because my kid’s father was like, ‘Ignore it,’ but I was like, ‘It’s too strong to ignore it.’”

Captain Jaeson Daniels with DeKalb County fire said the two victims were found dead in a bedroom.

Bella said that given the age and run-down condition of the condos, the fire could have been worse.

“I’m very thankful it didn’t affect my kids,” she said.

The victims have not been identified and their cause of death has not been released.
