DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A county commission has agreed to pay a man convicted of murder $75,000 after he said a jailer broke his jaw.

According to our investigative partners at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and AJC.com, DeKalb County commissioners voted Tuesday to pay 24-year-old Demetre Mason after county attorneys recommended the payment rather than going to trial and risking a larger award.

Mason sued after he said he was attacked by guards while awaiting trial.

The jail workers deny the allegations, but Sheriff Jeffrey Mann said both officers were suspended after the incident.

Mason is in the Hancock State Prison serving a life sentence for the 2014 deaths of 21-year-old Shaniqua Camacho and 20-year-old Sonia Williams.

Authorities have said a gang boss ordered Mason and several others to kill the women after Williams called the leader an insulting name.
