PAULDING COUNTY, Ga.,None — Police have identified a man shot by a Paulding County sheriff's deputy on Thursday night as the suspected cross-dressing bandit wanted for robbery in Marietta.
Police opened fire on John Edward McCrary, 33, after authorities said he pointed his gun at law officers.
Paulding County sheriff's Sgt. Brandon Gurley said the ordeal began around 8 p.m. Thursday, when deputies responded to reports of a stolen vehicle at a residence near Boulder Run and Virgie Ballentine Drive.
Authorities say that's when officers confronted McCrary at the residence, and he pulled a handgun and pointed it at his head and threatened to shoot himself.
Gurley said that after several hours of negotiations, the suspect pointed the gun at deputies, and they fired at him. Gurley said McCrary is being treated for his wounds, and is at Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition.
The stolen Chevrolet Suburban at McCrary's home was located by the car dealership it was taken from using GPS.
Officials said McCrary is accused of holding up a BB&T bank on Sandy Plains Road on Halloween. He faces robbery and aggravated assault charges in that case.
