Deputies attempted to call the suspect out of his home, but say he did not comply.
They identified him as 39-year-old Daniel Olson and left the scene to get an arrest warrant.
Around 9 p.m., Coweta County 911 received a call from a neighbor reporting that Olson had left his home, armed with a gun and was driving toward Lowery Road.
The sheriff’s office says Olson approached a deputy, who was parked in the next neighborhood. The deputy told the man to drop the gun.
That’s when the GBI says Olson fired shots at the deputy and the deputy returned fire.
Olson was taken to Newnan Piedmont Hospital where he later died.
No deputies were injured.
Investigators say the suspect was identified, but his I.D. has not been released.
