Members of the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Section conducted the operation. Deputies attempted to take the suspect into custody, but officials said the person ran away on foot and ignored repeated commands to stop.

Sergeant N. Butler then deployed K-9 Cowboy to help apprehend the suspect.

According to the sheriff’s office, Cowboy was able to bring the suspect under control until deputies arrived and completed the arrest. The K-9 was then disengaged without further incident.

Medical personnel evaluated the suspect after the apprehension and cleared the person to return to custody, according to officials.

The sheriff’s office said K-9 deployments are based on the circumstances of each incident, including the severity of the alleged offense, the level of resistance and the need to safely resolve the situation.

Officials said the agency remains committed to using trained resources responsibly while prioritizing the safety of the public, deputies and people in custody.
