ATLANTA — The coronavirus is continuing to spread in Georgia. As of 7 p.m. Monday, there were 19,399 confirmed cases across the state with 775 deaths. There were 3,703 hospitalizations.

Dougherty County has reported the most deaths at 98. It continues to be one of the hardest-hit areas in Georgia. It’s not exactly clear how the virus had been brought to Albany, but officials had floated the idea that funerals for two people who died in March may have further spread the Coronavirus.

The Georgia Department of Public Health does not release compiled data on how many patients have recovered.

The model from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation now shows that Georgia passed its peak for virus-related deaths April 7, and hospitals may have reached their peak demand on resources last week. Earlier projections showed those milestones would not be reached until early May, after Gov. Brian Kemp’s original stay-at-home order was scheduled to expire April 30.

Kemp extended the public health emergency declared last month through May 13 but announced Monday he will allow the shelter in place order to expire.

To show you the weekly growth, here are the cases that have been reported in the last seven days. There’s a downward trend in new cases but there are still spikes:

  • Monday April 13: 13,621 cases (up by 1,076 cases), 480 deaths (38 new deaths)
  • Tuesday April 14: 14,578 cases (up by 957 cases), 524 deaths (44 new deaths)
  • Wednesday April 15: 15,260 cases (up by 682 cases), 576 deaths (52 new deaths)
  • Thursday April 16: 16,368 cases (up by 1,108 cases), 617 deaths (41 new deaths)
  • Friday April 17: 17,432 cases (up by 1,064 cases), 668 deaths (51 new deaths)
  • Saturday April 18: 17,841 cases (up by 409 cases), 677 deaths (9 new deaths)
  • Sunday April 19: 18,489 cases (up by 648 cases), 689 deaths (12 new deaths)
  • Monday April 20: 19,399 cases (up by 910 cases), 775 deaths (86 new deaths)

Georgia announced Wednesday it has expanded testing so that anyone who has symptoms can be tested, effective immediately. Commercial and state labs have completed over 84,300 tests.

There are five counties in Georgia that have more than 1,000 confirmed cases: Fulton, DeKalb, Dougherty, Cobb and Gwinnett.

Here is the latest county-by-county breakdown.

Most of the patients who died in Georgia had underlying health conditions.

The oldest death from coronavirus is a 101-year-old woman in Fulton County, and the youngest was 22-year-old woman in Muscogee County. They both had underlying health conditions.
