Community hosts vigil in honor of little Journey Cowart

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. — A metro community came together Sunday night for a candlelight vigil to remember 1-year-old Journey Cowart.  Police said she died of abuse.

"They came because they wanted justice for Journey, and they wanted to show their love.  But, I'm overwhelmed," said one family member.

Dozens of people said prayers and held candles in memory of  the little girl.

Police said the child died last week after being brought to a hospital.  They said she was not breathing.

Officers arrested Austin Payne and his girlfriend Brandy Boyd, the child's mother.  Journey's father died last year.

"I just can't hardly believe that little Journey is gone. But she's with her daddy, and she's with Jesus now.  And, she's not hurting anymore," said Barbara Cowart, grandmother.

Authorities charged Payne and Boyd with child cruelty and aggravated battery.  Police said the couple could face more charges pending the final autopsy.
