COBB COUNTY, Ga. — “Ford vs. Ferarri” won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing Sunday night, and a metro Atlanta luxury car had a lot to do with the big win.
Channel 2′s Justin Wilfon was in Cobb County, where the 1961 Ferrari is now in Steve Bush’s garage. Now, millions of people know what it sounds like.
The sound of the engine revving is featured in “Ford vs. Ferrari.”
“It has an extremely unique sound,” Bush said. “It sounds unlike any street Ferrari you’ve ever heard. It is a race engine, and it was built to be a race engine.”
It's the sound that filmmaker Don Sylvester needed.
“I was looking for a car that had a personality, that had a sound to it, that would distinguish itself from all the other cars and it certainly does," Sylvester said.
But how did Bush's car end up in a Hollywood film?
It turns out, Sylvester grew up in metro Atlanta. On a trip home to visit family in 2018, he went to take a look at Bush’s Ferrari.
“I took a ride in it with Steve and it just knocked my socks off," Sylvester said. "I knew that had to be the car.”
Sound engineers ended up bringing the car to Florida to record it. Sylvester's team covered the car with 16 microphones and then asked Bush to rev it up.
“It was a great day. 75 degrees. I’m out there running around, romping around, having a good time.. making a lot of noise. That’s a great day," Bush said.
All that noise earned Sylvester an Academy Award nomination for best sound editing.
“It feels fantastic,” Sylvester said. “I’ve never been nominated for anything.”
