COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Students in one part of metro Atlanta are concerned after they claim their school did not go into lockdown when officers found a gun on campus.

It happened at South Cobb High School along Clay Road near Austell.

Students want to know how a gun even made it on campus, and one told Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell that she would feel safer with metal detectors.

Parents were shocked when they received a letter Wednesday about a student who brought a gun to school.

Student Manuel Menjivar says he was in school but didn’t know about it.

“They should’ve just made an announcement. like a little lockdown for it. Instead, they had a normal schedule like nothing even happened,’ he said.

“Our police officers did confiscate a gun from a student’s backpack after detecting it during an unrelated discipline issue with a different student. The firearm was not used as a direct threat to the school, our students, or staff and two students who were involved are in custody,” said a Cobb County School District spokesperson.

Students spoke to Channel 2, with permission from their parents, to discuss school safety.

“I think that we should have metal detectors, because it could actually help our school. It might be a long process to get in the school building, but I think it would be worth it because school shootings happen,” said junior Alysin Raphael.

One student said he appreciates how quickly the district handled the situation and feels safe.

“I think they did a good job, because we didn’t know until like after, so there was nothing for us to worry about,” Chris Tucker said.

Last week, police say a 15-year-old Hillgrove High School student brought a gun to campus.

The school was placed on a code red lockdown as officers located the student within minutes and recovered the gun.

The district hasn’t released any information about why the school wasn’t placed on lockdown but said there was never a threat to students or staff.
