‘Didn’t deserve this:’ Friend of deputy killed in Cobb County remembers him

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A friend of one of two Cobb County deputies shot and killed while serving a warrant on Thursday night is remembering him.

Channel 2′s Justin Carter spoke with a former roommate of Deputy Jonathan Koleski.

Koleski, 42, and fellow Deputy Marshall Ervin Jr., 38, were serving a warrant in the Hampton Glen neighborhood when they were ambushed. Both men were shot and died from their injuries.

Christopher Golden and Christopher Cook were arrested early Friday morning after an hours-long standoff.

Ervin joined the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office in 2012. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Koleski joined the office in 2007 and leaves behind a wife.

Matthew Shields lived with Koleski for two-and-a-half years before he moved out to get married.

“It’s just awful to hear,” Shields told Carter. “Jon was a good guy. He obviously didn’t deserve this.”

Shields said that during their time living together, the two men became good friends.

“He was a runner and I used to run too,” Shields recalled. “I remember I was really hungry one time, and I had a bag of pancakes sitting on the counter. He made me some pancakes after my run.”

Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens Sr. said both men’s families are devastated and are in the beginning stages of making arrangements to honor their loved ones.
