New daycare center approved for Cobb County over community opposition for traffic impacts

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The Cobb County Commission voted to approve a new daycare center but not without pushback from two commissioners and multiple residents.

The commission voted 3-2 on Tuesday to allow Creative World Schools to build a new daycare center at the corner of Stilesboro Road and Dennis Kemp Lane.

Some Cobb County residents pushed back on the plan, taking issue with its impacts on traffic, noise levels and overall community activities in the area.

Commission Chair Lisa Cupid addressed several concerns presented by residents regarding traffic, noting that part of the development plan included ways to control traffic, such as a red light.

However, while residents opposed to the development are worried about traffic, some also pushed back on the plan to put the traffic light there, prompting confusion from Cupid about why plans to handle those concerns weren’t enough.

During discussion before an approval vote, Commissioner Keli Gambrill said residents had not been able to submit feedback or opinions for or against the development by email.

When Cupid asked how that was possible while bringing out a copy of one such email, the exchange between the commissioners grew testy, with one eventually saying zoning decisions were getting too political.

The vote eventually passed, allowing Creative World Schools to move forward with their planned daycare center.

Only Commissioners Gambrill and JoAnn Birrell opposed the development, while Cupid and Comms. Erick Allen and Monique Sheffield voted to let the plan proceed.
