MARIETTA, Ga. — A visual memorial and reminder 25 years after 9/11 is now in place in Cobb County: the field of flags at Kennesaw Mountain.

In the field at the base of Kennesaw Mountain stands 2,977 full-sized American flags, one for each victim on 9-11-2001.
The “field of flags” started by the Kiwanis Club of Marietta is now on display every fifth year.
Volunteers, including local firefighters, paraded the flags from a nearby church last Saturday morning to the national battlefield park, placing each one.
Now the display stops drivers, hikers or anyone passing by.
For the 25th year after the 9/11 terror attacks, with rising costs, and all-new flags, organizers needed help raising over six figures.
“So the city of Marietta, Home Depot and several other big companies came alongside us and said we’ll help y’all, and this is what you see out here now,” said Ernie Wagoner, president of Kiwanis of Marietta.
Even in the dark, temporary lights donated by Cobb EMC flood the field all night.
The flags will stay up through 9-11, then for another week, for anyone to visit and experience.
Kiwanis of Marietta will host a memorial service here at 7:45 a.m. next Friday. Then the flags will stay up until Sept. 19.
