Coaches placed on leave as officials investigate Georgia teen’s death

BIBB COUNTY, Ga. — Two Georgia high school football coaches have been placed on administrative leave while officials investigate the death of a student after football practice.

Student athlete Joshua Ivory Jr. suffered a medical emergency in July and was rushed to the hospital in Macon. The 15-year-old died later that evening.

Southwest High School confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that two coaches were placed on administrative leave with pay, as of this week.

“Southwest High School football coaches Joe Dupree and Robert Cummings were placed on administrative leave with pay, beginning Wednesday, August 18, pending the results of a District investigation related to football practice on July 26. Due to the ongoing investigation, no further comment is available at this time,” a district spokesperson said.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the teen’s death.

At the time of Ivory’s death, the school’s principal released an emotional statement about the promising student:

“Joshua was a wonderful young man full of promise and zeal. He had an infectious smile and a very kind heart. He enjoyed sports and spending time with his family. Joshua’s personality made it easy for him to make a great impression and huge impact on his teammates, coaches, and the entire Southwest family. He was one of a kind. A great example of a Southwest High School Patriot,” wrote principal A. Bernard Young on Facebook.
