CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — The family of a man whose death inside the Clayton County Jail has been ruled a homicide by neglect wants to know what happened to him.
Scott Worthy, 57 of Jonesboro, was hospitalized at Grady Memorial Hospital on Aug. 30, 2025 after suffering from “significant physical deterioration” while in the jail.
He died a few days later on Sept. 6, 2025. The medical examiner ruled that he died due to medical neglect and uninhabitable living conditions at the jail.

His family has now released a statement calling for answers about the “egregious neglect.”
They remember him as a Georgia Bulldogs fan and Christian who was active in his church community.
“[His] tragic death follows a far too long list of others who have suffered and died at Clayton County Jail over the past several years. Enough is enough,” they wrote in a statement.
An autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation found Worthy suffered from a serious bacterial infection called crysipelas.

While hospitalized, Worthy tested positive for Streptococcus pyogenes and developed septic shock, respiratory failure, renal failure, encephalopathy and multiple other complications “associated with severe systemic infection.”
His family says they have been asking for information and records on his treatment and time in the jail, but has not received those.
They also want to know what the leadership is doing to stop issues at the jail.
“Scott Worthy’s life will not be forgotten. His death will not be ignored,” they wrote in their statement calling for justice.
