1 killed after car slams into Buffalo Wild Wings; 1 other injured

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Police say a van drove into a Cobb County restaurant, killing one person and injuring another.

Authorities tell Channel 2's Ross Cavitt that a van crashed into the Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant on Barrett Parkway on Friday just after 4 p.m.

Witnesses said William Barton, 19, of McDonough, had been eating dinner in the restaurant, was run over by the van and became trapped underneath.

Lindsey Torronez, 22, of Marietta, was also injured in the incident. She was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital and was being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Cavitt spoke with a father and son who jumped in to help the victim.

"We thought that the building was collapsing and what it was was a van came barreling through there. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw it. My son started to move to the right, and that's when I moved out of the way, and it came right by us and ran over a man," the father told Cavitt.

They say the crash sounded like an explosion.

"The first thing I saw was the guy lodged under the van, so we tried to help him as much as we could. I was trying to talk to him and tell him he doesn't need to worry, and we'll fix him, and we'll figure everything out, but he was freaking out and then pretty much unresponsive," said witness Keegan Elsner.

Witnesses said the female driver, Carol Shipley, appeared disoriented and confused. She tried to help, but didn’t appear to know what was going on.

Channel 2's Jessica Jaglois talked to Barton's father Friday night, ans said his son had a pulse on the way to the hospital, but died soon after.

Barton's father said he was going to have a tough night ahead of him. He told Jaglois he had to tell William's baby sister that her brother would not be coming home.

Police and fire crews cleared the restaurant and are doing a structural assessment of the building.

Buffalo Wild Wings sent Channel 2 Action News a statement about the incident saying, “Our hearts go out to everyone that has been impacted by this tragic accident. Buffalo Wild Wings is cooperating fully with law enforcement officials regarding this unfortunate accident.”

Investigators said charges are expected to be filed in the incident.
