ATLANTA — A woman who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time has been killed in a pursuit crash, Georgia State Patrol said Monday.
We’ll have more on this story on WSB Tonight at 11 p.m.
Damage from the deadly crash outside a gas station in Southeast Atlanta caught drivers’ attention Monday night.
“God bless the family,” said Dayo Byrd.
Georgia State Patrol said this is a case of vehicular homicide that started on Interstate 20 near the Downtown Connector around 2:40 p.m. Monday.
A trooper said they saw a car going 90 MPH around the Boulevard exit ramp.
The trooper said they could not safety follow the car. A second trooper said they tried to catch up, but, before they could, the car flew out of control on the Hill Street exit ramp. It crashed into a car parked at a nearby Shell gas station.
The driver in the parked car is hospitalized.
A woman, Chatanna Patterson, was standing outside of the car. She did not survive. She was 51 years old.
Troopers said the driver who lost control is Fre’Shun White, 26, of Marietta.
He’s in the hospital. So is the passenger who was in the car with him.
GSP said he will face charges of vehicular homicide and serious injury by vehicle.
In a statement, the Georgia State Patrol said in part:
“Tonight, a family is grieving the sudden loss of a loved one, and our thoughts remain with everyone impacted by this tragedy. Moments like this leave lasting pain for families, friends, witnesses, and the broader community. While the investigation remains ongoing, this incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers created when drivers make reckless decisions and flee from law enforcement.”
