CONLEY, Ga. — Mattie Obie says she heard the commotion outside her house along Rock Cut Road shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday.
“At first it was a whole lot of police showing up. We’re looking out there and we were like, what’s really going on,” Mattie said.
Clayton County police had surrounded the house next door to hers. Cops raced out after reports of a trio of burglars who had broken into the place. Police say they quickly caught two of them, but the third holed up inside the house.
After a six-hour standoff, the third suspect was in custody around 3pm.
Dozens of officers had arrived along with the department’s SWAT truck, and police blocked any traffic from getting through the area. During the standoff Channel 2 heard police on a bullhorn ordering the suspect to come out.
Mattie Obie says thieves targeted the house shortly after the homeowner moved out. She thinks the neighbor was taken to an assisted care facility, but all her belongings were still in her home.
“We’ve been calling the police every other night. They have been coming out, but this time they were in there. They usually run out and around the back. So they caught them this time. The neighborhood has had enough of it. We’re tired of this,” Mattie said.
Police say they arrested Alonzo Williams outside the home, and captured Rochelle Smith inside. The third suspect, Joshua Bryant had been hiding in the attic. All three are charged with burglary, while Bryant had an additional charge of obstruction.
