CARTERSVILLE, Ga. — A man is dead after getting into a shootout with deputies while trying to run from a fast food restaurant. We now know his name.
Channel 2 Action News was in Cartersville on Tuesday, where Bartow County Sheriff’s deputies were involved in chasing down a man, later identified as Marcus Maurice Williams. Witnesses said Williams had a gun and fired at deputies after getting to a nearby hotel.

The sheriff’s office said deputies had initially gone to the McDonald’s on Joe Frank Harris Parkway because they’d received reports of someone pulling a weapon on an employee in the drive-thru.
Witnesses told Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach that they’d seen Williams running with a gun from a McDonald’s.

During the incident, the GBI said Williams ended up running to a nearby hotel, still armed. That’s when the situation intensified.
The GBI said Williams refused to follow commands from deputies on scene, then pointed and shot at the deputy, who returned fire, hitting him.
“The man was trying to hurt him, and he’s supposed to protect himself,” Richard Taylor, who says he witnessed the shooting at the Grassdale Suites, told Channel 2’s Candace McCowan. “I seen him crying, wiping tears. You can see a lot of remorse on his face.”
Williams was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.
GBI said no deputies were injured in the incident.
