COBB COUNTY, Ga — Nearly 18 months after the first COVID-19 vaccine became available, the world’s youngest population has now been approved to receive either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines.

“We just received our shipment today,” said Dr. Hiral Lavania of One Family Pediatrics. “We will have our first clinic on Friday.”

“I’m not really comfortable with it,” said parent Nathaniel Johnson.

Health officials around Metro Atlanta are starting to offer the vaccine, including the health department in Cobb County.

“I don’t know,” said parent Keira Nelson. “I’m scared they are going to get sick from it.”

Despite the controversy surrounding the vaccine, the response and turnout to clinics have been positive.

“We have about 60 children signed up for Friday,” said Lavania.

These vaccines are not the same ones that are given to adults. They are specifically designed to protect children between 6 months and 5 years old.

“I think most people are wondering if there are any major side effects,” said Lavania. “And we haven’t really seen any.”

The Moderna vaccine is given in two doses, while the Pfizer shot is given in three.
