ATLANTA — Police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened not far from where children were playing.

The shooting happened Monday morning at a bus stop on Delmar Lane in northwest Atlanta.

"It was about eight shots," witness Patricia Newell told Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach.

TRENDING STORIES:

Gehlbach was at the scene Monday morning as investigators towed a white Audi SUV, which was riddled with bullet holes, from the scene.

He reported that the car had bullet holes in the windshield, the driver's door and nearly all the side and back windows.

"I just saw the school kids running, scrambling," Newell told Gehlbach.

One witness outside on Delmar Lane said students had been waiting for the school bus outside the Sierra Ridge Apartments around 8:30 a.m. Monday when the shooting happened.

"Then the shots rang out and I look up to see which way they running for," Newell said.

Atlanta police said one victim was killed at the scene, and another was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Detectives are working to figure out if the two victims shot each other and, if so, why.

The shooting happened in a parking lot area behind the apartment building.

Officers found the dead victim in the street and think that, after he was shot, he ran down a driveway and collapsed just off the sidewalk.

Family members on the scene told Gehlbach the victim was just 20 years old.

Parent and school bus driver Shaneka Gardner said she heard about the shooting over her school radio.

"The first thing I thought was, 'My daughter going to school.' It's early. Wouldn't expect that drama that early, but it can happen any time," Gardner said.

Atlanta police said they'll need help in finding out exactly what happened and they need witnesses to come forward.

"Hopefully, once the victim down at the hospital gets out of surgery, he'll be able to tell us a little more as well," said Lt. Charles Hampton, with the Atlanta Police Department.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
