Wife releases video of Charlotte police shooting that killed man

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As protesters marched through the streets of Atlanta, the city of Charlotte braced for another night of unrest.

Sources tell our sister station, WSOC-TV, in Charlotte that officers found the fingerprints and DNA of the man they killed on the gun they found at the scene.

Protesters told Channel 2’s Tom Jones they want police to release their video of the shooting.

Jones said the group of protesters that took to the streets of the Queen City Friday night started small and kept growing throughout the evening.

For the second night in a row, protesters managed to get on the expressway.

“We were forced off but I feel like we made our presence known,” protester Justin Thomas told Jones.

The disruption backed up traffic, but police quickly removed the protesters.

That's when the crowd took their demonstration back Uptown.

Jones said he saw plenty of police following the protesters around to keep them from causing a major disruption.

The group was upset over the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott. A black police officer shot him when officers say Scott pulled out a weapon.

Scott's family says he didn’t have a weapon. The family released a video shot by Scott's wife Friday, showing what led up to the shooting.

The protesters say the incident from their own city is just another instance of black life that doesn't matter.

Thomas said the video has swayed his opinion about the case, but he wouldn't say which way.

“You can't really rush to conclusions, but at times when you see certain things and put freeze-frames together, then you can kind of make some decisions,” Thomas said.

A Charlotte officer in charge told Jones despite the expressway incident, Friday evening's protest has remained peaceful.

Keith Scott's mother says if he was alive, he would go to the protests that have been taking place, grab his kids and take them home if he found out they were rioting.

Cellphone video showing Scott's deadly encounter with police was released Friday.

The video was recorded by Scott's wife, Rakeyia Scott, on her cellphone and shows the end of her husband's life.

It's clear from the video that she can't believe what she saw.

“Did you shoot him? Did you shoot him? Did you shoot him?” Rakeyia Scott can be heard yelling at several Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers.

The shooting has set off days of protests, some demonstrators becoming violent and damaging property.

The whole thing began when Scott's wife came outside and saw police surrounding her husband's truck Tuesday.

“He has no weapon,” Rakeyia Scott can be heard yelling to police.

The video shows officers continuing to try to get Scott to come out of his truck and drop his weapon.

"Keith, don't do it," Rakeyia Scott said.

It's not clear what she meant. She tells him again not to do it. Then officers open fire.

What's captured next on the video has put protesters in a foul mood.

Scott's mother said if her son was alive, he wouldn't stand for any rioting. She is asking demonstrators to protest in peace.

"I would appreciate, as Keith Lamont Scott's mother, that y'all give up the rioting. Y'all can have a peaceful walk or anything else that y'all want to do, but rioting is not helping this situation. It's making it worse," Vernita Scott Walker told Channel 2's Tom Jones.

Walker said it is time to come together and stop the violence.
