Witness Megen Chey told Channel 2’s Cory James she recorded the chaotic scene.
“We had to run and jump over the barricades,” she said.
Chey said she and her friends were outside the Yacht Club around 2:30 a.m. Sunday when the crash occurred. She said she was in shock after seeing the driver slam into a building.
“She tried reversing and driving,” Chey said. “My reaction was girl stop you are stuck ... like know when to take an L.”
The crash led to significant damage to a nearby body-piercing shop. Atlanta police arrived shortly after the crash and took the driver into custody.
"it’s really unfortunate especially because there are a lot of small businesses over here," Chey said.
Chey’s video shows the woman wearing a Little 5 Pub T-shirt.
Little 5 Pub confirmed in a statement that the driver was an employee. The restaurant said that she has been fired for conduct that “does not align with our values or standards.”
“We are reviewing the situation internally and will take appropriate steps as needed. We are in direct communication with the affected businesses and are cooperating fully with authorities. We remain committed to being a responsible and respectful member of the Little Five Points community.”
Chey said she is just glad no one was hurt.
“Frankly if that parking meter had not been there she probably would have been facing a manslaughter charge instead of a DUI.”
The investigation into the crash is ongoing and further details about the driver’s charges are expected to be clarified in the coming days.
Local business owners are assessing the damages and seeking repairs to resume normal operations.
