ATLANTA — Police are investigating a deadly wreck involving a car outside an Atlanta Kroger.

The incident happened before 1 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Ponce de Leon Avenue and Ponce de Leon Place, in front of the grocery store.

Atlanta police say a 2008 Honda struck another vehicle from behind on Ponce de Leon Ave. and then attempted to drive off from the scene. The driver passed Ponce City Market heading east where he lost control in the curve and struck a utility pole.

The impact caused the vehicle to split and immediately catch fire. Police say the driver likely died on impact.

Channel 2’s crew at the scene saw the charred vehicle in pieces along the sidewalk and in the intersection.

A pedestrian was struck by debris but was not seriously injured.

The medical examiner's office is working to identify the driver.
