ATLANTA — For many metro area high school students, it’s the night they don’t want to miss.

Prom season is right around the corner and a local non-profit has teamed up with the Atlanta Hawks to make sure girls who can’t afford a fancy dress will have one.

Channel 2’s Berndt Petersen was at the State Farm Arena, where they’ve set up a fancy boutique.

It looks like a very high-end dress department and the students are there to do a little shopping.

Only there are no price tags on any of these gowns.

As far as the chapter organizer of Becca’s Closet, Tiffany Cadogan is concerned, ’it’s the most wonderful time of the year.’

“I get super excited when it comes to prom season, because I know I’m going to be able to put smiles on some girls’ faces,” Cadogan said.

Becca’s Closet is a non-profit that provides free gowns for prom, homecoming, and military balls for girls who can’t afford them.

Without this help, the girls might end up missing the dance because of the high cost.

On Monday, they built a boutique inside one of the VIP lounges at the home of the Atlanta Hawks.

Dozens of local underserved teens from Fulton County schools were able to select a dress and have it fitted.

There was also a seamstress to care of the alterations, and hair and makeup stations.

America Lopez says she has been so looking forward to this for four years.

“Being able to come here and experience this is a life dream,” Lopez said.

America is a senior at Tri-Cities High School in south Fulton County.  On prom night, Lopez will be dressed to the nines.

“It really touches my heart, because I know a lot of people who dream of things like this,” America said.

The Lady Hawks, including the wives and significant others of the team’s players and coaches, were on hand to help.

“I’m already getting teary just thinking about it. To know the joy and excitement when I walked in and was in awe of the dresses,” Lady Hawks member Laura Prunty said.

Cadogan said it’s a major high school milestone and she wants the girls to look their very best.

“When they get the dress and take the picture and say yes we’re so excited. We celebrate with them and can’t wait to see them on prom night,” Cadogan said.

This is the second year the non-profit and the Lady Hawks have worked together to provide free prom dresses.
