Third UGA swimmer qualifies for Rio Olympics

OMAHA, NE — A third University of Georgia swimmer will now represent the United States in the upcoming Olympic Games.

Rising UGA senior Olivia Smoliga won the 100-meter backstroke during Tuesday night’s trials in Nebraska.

Smoliga will join fellow Bulldogs Chase Kalisz and Jay Litherland at the Rio Olympic Games.

We spoke to UGA’s head swimming coach through skype.

The two beat 11-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte on Sunday in the 400-meter individual medley.

"Everyone has a hand in the success, particularly the kids because they have to do the work we give them and we give them work," Jack Bauerle said.

Bauerle said this is a huge win not only for UGA but the state of Georgia.
