“It’s something bigger now,” Zamora-Hernandez said. “When I heard about it, I went to my group chat. I told my friends. I’m like, ‘Oh my God! Georgia has gone blue and we get Keisha Lance Bottoms,’” Howard said.
Her election is part of the historic blue wave across Georgia and the nation.
As the first Black woman elected governor in the U.S., Bottoms not only made history, she has a history at Douglass High as a member of the Class of ’87.

“Would you like to ask her to come back for a visit?” Channel 2’s Berndt Petersen asked Principal Shermaine Jennings.
“Indeed! What I’d like to say to her is our kids are very inspired, and proud of your accomplishment,” Jennings said.
It’s an accomplishment Zamora-Hernandez and Howard may one day pursue themselves.
“It just like brought me so much emotion, so much joy. It makes me feel like I could be something big like that in the future,” Zamora-Hernandez said.
