ATLANTA — A person with mobility issues was assisted from an apartment as a precaution during a fire in northwest Atlanta on Thursday night.

This is the same complex where Channel 2’s Ashli Lincoln talked to residents about the landlord’s unpaid gas bill last week.

Delondis Taylor has lived at the Fairburn and Gordon Apartment complex for 16 years and says he smelled the fire before he spotted the flames.

His brother Demetrius Taylor told Channel 2’s Susan Hendricks he called 911 as soon as he saw black smoke but was put on hold.

Atlanta Fire Rescue Department said they responded to the 200 block of Fairburn Road after reports of a fire.

Crews found heavy smoke and fire at the scene coming from a third-floor apartment.

Atlanta fire said crews started an aggressive interior attack and worked to contain the fire that had reached the roof and attic.

The fire started on the 3rd floor in Building C. Firefighters told Hendricks they had to rescue people on the second floor and the first floor, also evacuating those in Building B.

They also searched for residents. No resident injuries were reported.

The fire was brought under control, preventing significant extension.

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause.

Hendricks spoke to residents in Building A who say they were shocked to see the flames but they have been having problems in this complex for years, and no one has done anything to help them.

“We’re living in unsafe conditions. It’s 90 degrees right now. My dad is 77 years old and I want him to live longer,” Delondis Taylor said.
