ATLANTA — Wilson Mill Park is a place where we saw elementary school-age kids at football and cheerleading practice this evening.
It’s been that way for decades.

That’s why with this spike in crime, Atlanta police and city council members are acting quickly to make changes.
This isn’t your normal evening walk in Wilson Mill Park with Atlanta Police Department’s chief leading a group of neighbors.
But the people who live in Adamsville say these are not normal times.
The park where they’ve raised their children, turned into a murder scene last night.
“I was coming in from an event and just heard shots going out,” Councilwoman Andrea Boone said.

Officers found a man in his mid-30s lying on the ground around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
He didn’t survive.
The murder led APD and Boone to gather less than 24 hours later to demand change.
“We are going to work hard to make sure the patrols are present here and our technology is present,” interim Atlanta police chief Darin Schierbaum said.
“We are going to talk to everybody — our law department, our chief about trying to close this park at 8 p.m. until we can get a handle on things,” Boone said.
They say it’s not just this murder.
There was another shooting in the park on July 24 and many on the street are noticing this recent change.
“The bullet casings are out there,” neighbor SJ Tuck said. “Large crowds converging so we are here to let everyone know that we are going to take Wilson Mill Park back today.”

The hope is that they can get more community and police involvement to make a change here before anyone else is hurt.
“I would like to see this park go back to where it was when my kids were growing up,” Tuck said.
