The inaugural classes for the Internal Medicine Residency and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship are expected to begin training in July 2027, while the Vascular Surgery Fellowship is slated to start in 2028.

The initiative comes during a broader national physician shortage and rising demand for medical services. Research indicates that physicians frequently choose to practice in the geographic regions where they complete their residency or fellowship programs.
“The accreditation of these programs reflects the outstanding clinical expertise, educational resources and commitment of our physician leaders and hospital teams,” Karen Law, M.D., chief of GME at Piedmont, said. “We are excited to recruit outstanding residents and fellows for 2027 and to cultivate training environments that prepare future physicians to provide exceptional care for patients across Georgia.”
Piedmont Health care operates as a private, not-for-profit organization serving communities across Georgia.
The newly accredited offerings include an Internal Medicine Residency and a Vascular Surgery Fellowship, both based at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital.
Additionally, a Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship will be based at Piedmont Athens Regional, with Piedmont Atlanta serving as a participating training site.
By 2035, Piedmont projects its expanded graduate medical education program will support hundreds of additional residents and fellows annually across multiple specialties.
Piedmont said it also plans to establishing programs in primary care, cardiovascular disease, orthopedics and transplant medicine.
