ATLANTA — Nearly 50 people were displaced after fires torn through three separate apartment buildings in metro Atlanta Sunday.
The first fire happened early Sunday morning at the Dunwoody Crossing Apartments in Sandy Springs. Nine people who lived in the 8-unit building were displaced.

A second fire broke out around 8:20 a.m. Sunday in the Austin Oak apartments on Glenwood Road. Just one unit was damaged but Red Cross volunteers helped 14 people who were displaced. The cause of that fire is still being investigated.
A third fire broke out at the Wood Terrace Apartments in Doraville around 6:15 p.m. The fire destroyed two units and another four sustained water damage. No one was injured, but 22 people were displaced. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

The Red Cross helped the victims with immediate emergency needs for lodging, food, clothing, personal care and other essentials.
Though the causes of yesterday’s fires have not been determined, Sandy Springs Fire Department reminds people that December is the peak month for candle fires.

The National Fire Prevention Association recommends you keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn, never leave a candle alone and extinguish candles when you leave the room.
