Moores Mill Road bridge still closed; here’s what drivers need to know about detours

A water valve failure caused a buttress wall to collapse at the bridge.

ATLANTA — The Moores Mill Road bridge over Peachtree Creek is closed after a heavy vehicle hit it and damaged both the bridge’s support and a water line.

City officials say the Department of Watershed Management and the Atlanta Department of Transportation are working together to figure out exactly what repairs are needed. Crews are on site checking out the damage and making plans to fix it. The bridge will stay closed until everything is safe and the repairs are finished.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area, follow posted detour signs and allow extra travel time. Detours are as follows:

  • Eastbound on Moores Mill Road NW:
    • Turn left onto Ridgewood Road NW
    • Turn right onto West Wesley Road NW
    • Turn left onto Moores Mill Road NW
  • Westbound on Moores Mill Road NW:
    • Turn right onto West Wesley Road NW
    • Turn left onto Ridgewood Road NW
    • Turn right onto Moores Mill Road NW

Triple Team Traffic also suggests using West Wesley Road and Defoors Ferry Road as alternate routes.

The city has not said what kind of vehicle hit the bridge. Officials are still looking into what happened and how much work will be needed to get things back to normal.

Atlanta City Councilmember Dustin Hillis shared on social media that an overnight water valve failure caused a buttress wall to collapse at the bridge.

He also pointed out that even if the bridge is reopened or repaired, it is still a top priority for replacement since it is more than 100 years old and has had several issues over the years.

This is not the first time the area has had water main problems. There was a water main break here in 2012.

City officials say they will share more updates as the assessment and repair work continues.
