DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A metro Atlanta couple contracted COVID-19 and died three days apart from each other.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes spoke to the daughter who is devastated to be spending the holidays without them.

Nona Monroe said anyone who’s not taking the coronavirus seriously, should. She fought a bout of COVID-19 in the hospital, too. She was the only one who survived.

“It was hard to come home and knowing that my parents aren’t there,” Monroe said.

Monroe is still on oxygen, having trouble breathing after complications with COVID-19.

She still doesn’t know how she and her parents contracted the virus, but she believes it may have been her children who brought it home from a Douglas County school.

But she also said she and her parents could have caught the virus on Thanksgiving because even though they didn’t have a big crowd at the house, four members of the family felt sick about a week after the holiday and later tested positive for COVID-19.

“The sad part is my daddy died three days before my mom and I think my dad went to my mom and told her to, ‘Come on.’ That’s how I’m going to think about it, I have to put some humor in it because I don’t want to cry anymore,” Monroe said.

Her parents were married for 49 years and they were planning their 50th anniversary party, which included renewing their vows.

Monroe wants to warn anyone planning to celebrate Christmas with people outside of their household. She said it’s not worth it, they could die later.

“I never knew how it felt until it happened to me and when it happened to me, it’s hard. It’s hard and I just want people to take it for real. This is not no joke,” Monroe said.

This will be a tough week to get through for that family. They started a GoFundMe page for funeral expenses.
