During the 2023 World House Interfaith and Interdenominational Assembly, Reverend Dr. Lawrence Edward Carter Sr., Dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, presented the inaugural Gandhi-King-Mandela Peace Price to Dr. Russell M. Nelson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
“I was privileged to be the recipient of the Morehouse College inaugural Gandhi-King-Mandela Peace Prize this evening,” Nelson wrote on Twitter. “I was unable to travel to Atlanta to be at the ceremony, but I recorded a short message that was shown at the event.”
Carter also awarded the Gandhi-King-Ikeda Community Builder’s Prize to Dr. Ira Helfand, the recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize and co-president of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.

The awards aim to celebrate a person who promotes peace and positive social transformation through nonviolent means.
“There is no way to peace. Peace is the way, and nonviolence is the path,” said Dr. Carter. “You cannot succeed by preaching and lecturing about peace. You must be the thing itself. You cannot have what you are not willing to be.”
