Georgia Hunters for the Hungry seeks deer donations to fight food insecurity

The initiative allows hunters to contribute venison through participating meat processors at no cost.

ATLANTA — Georgia hunters have an opportunity to support families facing food insecurity this hunting season by donating harvested deer through the Georgia Hunters for the Hungry program.

The initiative allows hunters to contribute venison through participating meat processors at no cost.

The Georgia Hunters for the Hungry program has provided meat to state residents since 1993. During the previous hunting season, donations exceeded 144,000 pounds of venison across Georgia.

Chris Harper, director of the Wildlife Resources Division for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, noted that the program expands the impact of individual hunting efforts.

“For many Georgia hunters, the reward of a successful hunt goes beyond filling their own freezer. Through the Hunters for the Hungry program, they have an opportunity to share their harvest and make a meaningful difference in the lives of fellow Georgians,” Harper said.

“Hunters can donate their deer at no cost, knowing their contribution not only helps put nutritious meals on the table but also supports responsible deer management,” Harper said.

The program is a joint partnership involving the Georgia Wildlife Federation, the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division, the Georgia Food Bank Association and Municipal Development Services, LLC.

Along with deer donations, program organizers are seeking assistance in identifying new meat processors in underserved areas and encouraging additional processors to join the network.
